Super star Ms. Ching-Shia Lin has published her debut book. I was anxious to read it because I wanted to
know how she could convert herself from a movie star to a writer. My friend, Ms. Ying-I Liao, a famous fashion
designer, has also published her book recently.
I couldn’t wait to find out how she went from being a medical doctor to
a fashion designer. She was the first
Chinese person to ever win the championship in a famous fashion competition in
Mila, Italy. Last week, a successful
entrepreneur strongly recommended I read an autobiography of artist, Mr.
Ming-Wu Liu. I was very curious what
kind of stories could this tycoon find so touching. I borrowed the book and read throughout the day
and night.
In the three weeks it took to finish those books, I found something similar in all three of them. The authors’ belief in being themselves in life has brought them happiness, fame and wealth. The superstar Ms. Lin decided to devote herself to writing when she was an idol in glamorous acting industry. Her determination to be herself has brought her even more glamour because her book is one of the best selling in Taiwan. My friend, Ms. Liao, finished the strict training in a famous medical school and got a job at the prestigious Veteran Hospital. She surprised everyone a few years ago when she gave up her medical practice and went back to school to learn fashion design. Now she is an outstanding fashion designer. Her future is promising. The artist Mr. Liu is the greatest artist of Eastern renaissance art. His exceptional talent in classic architecture, sculpture, Koji ceramic and gem-glaze ceramic painting has brought him the title, Mr. Formosa, the treasure of Taiwan. He is a legend since he only finished primary school education. His determination to be himself has attributed to his success. In fact, there is nothing unachievable in his life.
From three of all those writers I found that their success was achieved simply because they wanted to be themselves. This strength allowed them to tackle the problems they encountered. I certainly cannot compare myself with them, but I am happy that I also share the same belief and have been applying it in my life. I established the first English immersion school in Taiwan when I was a stay-at-home mother. I launched an English language children’s program on three radio stations and now all the students from 235 elementary schools in central Taiwan are using it to strengthen their English ability. Believe or not, my formal training and first career was in science. A few years ago I started taking dance lessons. Even though I was an amateur and was always frustrated with my learning, I am now promoting sport dance in Taiwan and have successfully sponsored two national open tournaments.
To be myself has made my life rich.
Certainly I can never compare myself with those celebrities I am happy
who I am and what I am doing. Life is
wonderful when you can be yourself, isn’t it?
